Recap and recording of our Webinar “the Renovation Wave: Modernising our Heating Systems for Carbon-Neutral Buildings”

Recap and recording of our Webinar “the Renovation Wave: Modernising our Heating Systems for Carbon-Neutral Buildings”

Last week on 8 October we were joined by Pernille Weiss MEP (EPP, DK), Karlis Goldstein (energy efficiency adviser to Kadri Simon, EU Commissioner for Energy), and CEO of BDR Thermea Bertrand Schmitt for a roundtable virtual discussion on EU Renovation Wave policy. The session was moderated by Peter Vis, former chief of staff for the EU’s first Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard.

The webinar was streamed on webinarjam and lasts one hour. For those unable to attend, a recording of the session is available here .

Here are just a few of our highlights from the session:

  • Replacing old and inefficient heating systems will be key to achieve the 2030 target on greenhouse gas reductions, and should be a focus area of the Renovation Wave. Today, most heating systems in Europe’s buildings would be in class C, D or lower of the energy label.
  • The European Commission wants ≈40% of our energy to come from renewable sources and waste heat, and that they won’t be technology-specific when it comes to heating.
  • Digitalisation of our heating systems, and investing in the relevant skills surrounding this new technology, will be necessary for the transition to carbon-neutrality.
  • The discussion on potentially including buildings in EU ETS, and how we must ensure any carbon price on buildings doesn't simply leave the poorest among us bearing the brunt of high energy costs, but rather provide people with the means to invest in efficient and renewable-based systems.
